Let me take you back to my days as an executive pastor, where part of my role was to be the guardian at the gate. My job was to filter out the noise and protect my lead pastor from those who saw him as just another stepping stone on their path to success. Seeing how some people would exploit others for their own gain was disheartening. I wanted to scream from the rooftops, “These people don’t want great things for you; they want everything from you.”
Unfortunately, the shadow of transactional intent still looms large in my role today as an executive coach. It’s frustrating when clients approach me solely to exploit my network instead of seeking genuine guidance. But I remain committed to helping those who want to achieve their goals. My relationships are built on trust, hard work, and authentic character, and they are not commodities to be traded.
